Ingredients
  

For the Cake
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 cups sugar
  • 1.5 cups unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tablespoon baking soda
  • 1.5 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1.5 teaspoons salt
  • 4 large eggs at room temperature
  • 1.5 cups buttermilk at room temperature
  • 1.5 cups strong brewed coffee, cooled
  • ¾ cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
For the Frosting
  • 2 cups butter, softened at room temperature
  • 6 cups powdered sugar sifted
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder sifted
  • cup heavy cream
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon salt

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour three 9-inch round cake pans or two 10-inch pans.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together eggs, buttermilk, coffee, oil, and vanilla.
  4. Combine wet and dry ingredients and mix until smooth.
  5. Divide the batter among the pans and bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  6. Cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then turn the cakes onto wire racks to cool completely.
Frosting
  1. To make the frosting, beat the butter until fluffy.
  2. Gradually add sifted powdered sugar and cocoa, alternating with heavy cream.
  3. Beat in vanilla and salt.
Assembly
  1. Assemble the cake by frosting between each layer, and then frost the top and sides.
  2. Decorate as desired and refrigerate for 30 minutes before serving.

Notes
